Abstract or Description:

'A Distance of Stones' is a text published as part of a collective exhibition and publication curated by Elizabeth XI Bauer.

Towards the end of his life the writer and artist Roger Caillois became fascinated by what he termed 'picture stones'; agates and jaspers that appeared to house figurative images. In response he wrote "The Writing of Stones", that looked at how we might receive recognisable representations formed not by human hand and from a distant era. In 'A Distance of Stones' Coutts revisits many of Caillois’ concerns. The Vampire Squid, its distance and proximities to humans in Villem Flusser’s writing and the role of attraction in the sermons of Medieval Theologian and Mystic Meister Eckhart are used to unravel knowledge forms that are not yet the property of the intellect.
