Abstract or Description:

'Mimics 1' is an image and text work commissioned by the German Animal Studies Journal 'Tierstudien' for an issue dedicated to Animals and Mimicry subtitled "Mimesis, Mimikry, Mimese“.
Mimics 1 is also the title of a series of five photo-etchings (2015) made by Coutts within a larger body of work that culminated in the solo show 'My Previous Life as an Ape' at Danielle Arnaud Contemporary Art (also 2015). Coutts uses Lincoln’s Inn as setting for the images, interested in its status as the UK’s largest concentration of lawyers’ chambers – a labyrinth of period buildings in which legal cases are prepared in close proximity to the courts. The Photo-etchings house eye-spot mimics such the Owl Butterfly and the Serval (a wild cat that appears to have eyes at the back of its head) between the buildings, arguing that on some level these animals have evolved similar attributes to lawyers in their manipulation of foreground and background, lightness and shade, information revealed and hidden.
