Millar, Jeremy, 2010, Show, Exhibition or Event, Every Day is a Good Day: The Visual Art of John Cage

Abstract or Description:

A solo exhibition of the visual art of John Cage, and the largest ever held. The exhibition was conceived by Jeremy Millar for Hayward Touring, and organised in collaboration with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the John Cage Trust.

The exhibition contained over 70 of Cage’s works, from all of the artist’s major projects between 1969 until 1992. The works were taken from American collections, and a research visit to the John Cage Trust at Bard College was made to identify and secure works for loan.

In keeping with Cage’s use of chance operations in his compositions, the works were selected and installed using a comparable method, thereby creating unforeseen relationships between the works. Millar developed a ‘score’ for these chance operations, with the approval of the John Cage Trust, and this was then passed onto each venue to be used in determining their installation; at no time did a curator choose which works were to be included, and where they were to be placed, thereby extending curatorial practice in this country.

In addition to the accompanying publication, this exhibition led to numerous talks and performances, including the companion exhibition ‘Cage/Mix’ at BALTIC (in which Millar also participated as an artist); one-day symposia at both BALTIC, and at the University of Cambridge; and a sell-out concert of Cage’s works at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, during which Millar also performed. The exhibition was reviewed in the national and international press, and was featured on BBC Radio Scotland, for which Millar was interviewed.

The exhibition toured from June 2010 until September 2011, to the following venues:
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (61,771 Visitors); Kettle's Yard, Cambridge (2,958); Huddersfield Art Gallery; Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, Glasgow (8,959); De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill on Sea (27,869); Project Space, Hayward Gallery, London (8,611). (Total attendance: 110,168)
