  • Reverse Subtraction Cutting

Roberts, Julian, 2018, Conference or Workshop, Reverse Subtraction Cutting at India Design Confluence, Ahmedabad, India, 23-25 Nov 2018.

Abstract or Description:

A ‘Reverse Subtraction Cutting’ lecture where Julian Roberts dissected apart a prototype garment to reveal its inner geometry, and described how Subtraction Cutting can be creatively used to develop highly experimental fashion design, and explore zero waste methodologies which minimize material waste during prototype manufacture. During this practical demonstration Julian showed multiple videos and images which tell the story of his career and how he came to develop his unusual approach to fashion construction.

'Subtraction Cutting' is the name given to an experimental method of hollow construction invented by fashion designer and academic Julian Roberts, taught extensively by him worldwide in 32 countries since 1998. These unusual techniques and methodologies have been made freely available online since 2001, and can be used diversely to make mens and womens fashion garment prototypes.

The IDC conference presentation was followed by a 3-day masterclass workshop for students and faculty staff at the Worldinstitute of Design at Karnavati University. During these sessions demonstration garments were cut live by Julian, followed by a collaboration where students worked in pairs to develop their own unique versions for exhibition critique.
