Thompson, Milly and Jones, Alison, 2012, Show, Exhibition or Event, ÉVASION
Abstract or Description: | The group exhibition ‘ÉVASION’ (devised and curated by Alison Jones & Milly Thompson included Josephine Meckseper, Martha Rosler, Nicole Wermers and Jones & Thompson) deconstructed women's uncomfortable relationship to ‘women’s magazines’. The exhibition revealed the apparatus of competition, commodification and self-exploitation through a range of explicit performative strategies: hyperbolic advertising - (‘advertisement’ poster for ‘ÉVASION’), self-publicity (artists’ book ‘VUOTO’ with an 'editorial' by Nina Power) and a self-reflexive performance 'by' a gallery employee (‘ÉVASIONISTA’, 'live sculpture and creation' by Jones & Thompson). The exhibition took place at Lanchester Gallery Projects (LGP), The Hub, Jordan Well, Coventry, UK A panel discussion explored the themes of the exhibition with contributions from Nicholas Cullinan (Directory, National Portrait Gallery), Mark Harris (Artist, Critic and Curator), Ian Hunt (Critic and Author), Angela McRobbie (Professor of Communications, Goldsmiths), Monika Szewcyk (Writer, Editor and Curator). The projects that comprise the exhibition 'ÉVASION' including 'ÉVASION'; 'ÉVASIONISTA', 'VUOTO' and the 'ÉVASION' panel discussion, and 'C21ST Art-Worker', and 'Martha Rosler reads Vogue' are included in the publication ‘C21ST RECENT HISTORY’, 2016 (see item in this repository http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/2032/) |
