Richon, Olivier, 2014, Show, Exhibition or Event, Foreign Exchange (or the stories you would not tell a stranger)
Abstract or Description: | Foreign Exchange proposed a reflection upon ethnography, the archive and the museum as a discursive space in which questions of otherness, post colonialism and exoticism are articulated. The aim of the exhibition is to strip the objects from their exotic connotations to emphasise their signifying power as artefacts in their own right, freed from the over interpretative voice of ethnography. Richon's contribution to the exhibition is the outcome of a research residency at the museum to investigate the role of photography in constructing representations of ethnographic objects, paying particular attention to notions of exoticism and otherness and how these can be called into question. Researching the museum's collection of artifacts from Oceania, Richon selected objects that were not from indigenous communities but props and items that foregrounded the presence of the observer rather than the observed.
