Jones, Sarah, 2013, Show, Exhibition or Event, New Pictures 8
Abstract or Description: | This major solo exhibition brought together 13 large-scale photographic works made between 2007 and 2013. Presenting key works that highlight Jones’s experimental approach to genre within photography, the exhibition incorporated still life, portraiture and the diptych. Using reduced depth of field, Jones tests the relationship between subjects and their space through double perspective and the compositional geometries of the diptych. ‘New Pictures 8’ was part of an exhibition programme described by its curator David Little as ‘dedicated to innovative work by emerging artists from around the world… the series highlights the vital experimentations in photography and new media undertaken by artists who grapple with making images that address today’s culture’. Previous ‘New Pictures’ artists have included James Welling, Stan Douglas, Noriko Furunishi and Angela Strassheim. Jones delivered the fifth ‘Arnold Newman Lecture’ (2013) at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. She discussed her exhibition in terms of the formal and psychological dimensions of photography in her work. The lecture explored Jones’s recent concerns around genre and her research into surface, photographic black and the relationship of subject to the formal nature of her compositions. Previous artists who have been the featured ‘Newman Lecturer’ include Paul Graham, James Welling, Yto Barrada and Stan Douglas. |
