Britton, Alison, 2009, Journal Article, The Fiction of Form The Journal of Modern Craft, 2 (1). pp. 91-100. ISSN 1749-6772

Abstract or Description:

This essay was published in the Journal of Modern Craft,as the recurrent feature called 'Statement of Practice'. This international academic journal is published tri-annually by Berg, edited by Glenn Adamson, Erward S Cooke Jr, and Tanya Harrod.
Description: My essay was paired with, and responded to, another recurrent feature of the journal, an historic Primary Text by David Queensberry, a transcription of a paper 'The Designer, the Craftsman and the Manufacturer' given at the RSA in 1975. Lord Queensberry was Professor in the Ceramics Department when I studied at RCA in the early 1970s.
Abstract: Britton has selected three snapshots of her practice. The first reflects some of the themes of Professor Queensberry's lecture from the viewpoint of a student in his department in the early 1970s. The second, twenty years later, describes her development of a sustained mode of working with reference to a retrospective exhibition that toured the UK and concluded in the Netherlands. In the final section she attempts to define her current preoccupations and the mixed context of ideas that inform her ongoing practice.
