Wee, Cecilia, 2016, Other, Perform, Experience, Re-Live: BMW Tate Live Tate Public Programmes, London.

Abstract or Description:

I am editor-in-chief of the limited edition book Perform, Experience, Re-Live (published by Tate Public Programmes, 2016), an accessible volume exploring how making, experiencing and re-living of performance in the digital age. It examines performance from the perspectives of artists, as well as its contexts, taking the BMW Tate Live Performance Events, Performance Room and Talks events (2012-2015) as key case studies. http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/performance/bmw-tate-live
The relationship between liveness, digital media, performance and publishing is the fundamental starting point of the book, which consists of 15 contributions, as well as a small number of 'experimental' pages with multimedia augmented reality content that aim to capture the magic and excitement of the live performance, asking the reader to “perform the book”.

The publication and its accompanying AR app introduces key ideas in performance to a ‘lay’ audience, aiming to investigate the following research questions:
- Why is performance significant in a time of great change and innovation?
- How is performance still relevant in a digital age?
-
What insights can this set of artistic practices called 'performance' bring to contemporary life?
- How is performance informed and developed through its contemporary contexts?
Designed by Brody Associates, the book draws on the rich and varied forms of documentation that are produced in the making, promotion and recording of performance, by reproducing artists' materials, as well as incorporating the visual language of performance documentation into the design.
I edited this volume as well as writing the Editor’s Introduction, bringing my expertise in the histories and contexts of documenting live art and performance to commission artists, theorists and writers for this book.

Participating practitioners include Philip Auslander, Chris Dercon, Tim Etchells, Suzanne Lacy and Claire Tancons.
