Triggs, Teal, Shaughnessy, Adrian and Gerber, Anna, 2014, Book, GraphicsRCA: Fifty Years and Beyond Royal College of Art, London, UK. ISBN 978-1-910642-00-9
Abstract or Description: | This co-edited book accompanied the seminal exhibition 'GraphicsRCA: Fifty Years'(1963-2015) celebrating half a century of graphic design through the work of students and staff at the College. Whilst offering a document of the work contained within the exhibition (London, 2014; Brasilia, 2015), the book takes the curatorial process further by commissioning essays and interviews from noted designers and historians external to the College. This objective perspective, coupled with the views of current staff, students and alumni, on the RCA's graphic design archives, brings new critical insights on the material, pedagogical processes and importantly the professional roles and impact of alumni internationally since the programme's inception in 1948. The book is set out in sections which mirror the philosophical positioning of the College's first Professor of Graphic Design, Richard Guyatt: HEAD, HAND, HEART; and is bookended by a contextual history of RCA British graphic design (BEGINNINGS) and indicators of the future directions of design education (DIRECTIONS) of which Triggs has contributed the essay 'School assemblies start this Tuesday 14 October at 1pm in Studio 6' (pp.144-152). |
