Inspired by the predictive and selective functions of AI neural perceptron Emergent Dialogues of the Topophilic Line was an exhibition at Gallerie Marzee in the Netherlands featuring a series of new jewellery objects, film, publication and spoken performance by Jonathan Boyd.
Taking as its starting point the consideration that rhizomatic writings, such as A Thousand Plateaus, creak, and break by the linear conventions of typeset, Emergent Dialogues of the Topophilic Line (EDofTL) (2021), undertook a deliberately exploratory set-up where form-less writings might be enabled. The metaphor of rhizome doesn’t quite cover the intentions of academic writing. Chapters can be read in any order and words may create pictures that fly in multiple directions, but the line on the page, the end of the sentence continues in a linear logic. One sentence starts with another following closely after, and, in turn, each paragraph precedes its follower. EDotTL looked to see if a more methodologically appropriate approach to writing rhizomatically could be possible, where the emergent outcomes of multiple complexities feed into an ongoing flux of meaning.
Through sedimentary processes, jewellery works which are formed/drawn/written/performed in Virtual Reality and given physical form as a fossilization (SLS) of the performative and gestural writing process. In the Virtual space (Reality +) a new sense of space and place has to be formulated and in empty brightly coloured environments words are drawn/written/performed. Unrestricted by a lack of “ground” or canvas/paper the words become three-dimensional and find themselves folding and unfolding, growing and shrinking. Through a broken syntax, which is formed as much by chance as intention, the author reacted to external audio-readings of writing as well as songs and prose with the writing taking place through an unpredictable and unknowable line. Starting from a single point the line grows outwards with form directly informing meaning and meaning directly informing form.
