‘Of immobility alone does the intellect form a clear idea’, Bergson, Creative Evolution (Lanham, 1983, p155)

The painting is fixed to the wall and doesn’t move and its flat surface is divided, marked, layered with pigment. And yet, the sensation before the work is of movement, of life. Flat is an exhibition of paintings by four artists whose different interests remain evident and yet whose work demonstrates the capacity of the flat surface to elicit sensations of movement
across boundaries, across scale and perhaps across time and place. The duration of a life enfolded in the work is unfolded (paradoxically) through the appearance of an immobile flat and bounded surface.
