Fantini van Ditmar, Delfina, 2022, Show, Exhibition or Event, A not too comfortable future

Abstract or Description:

The Design Museum RESTORE Design Researchers in Residence: Restore catalogue brings together the work of the 2021/22 Design Researchers in Residence as part of the Future Observatory. The programme explores the most pressing societal and environmental issues to help achieve the nation’s environmental goals. In its foundation year, and in conjunction with the museum’s Waste Age: What Can Design Do? exhibition, the Future Observatory theme focused on the Net Zero agenda and related environmental issues. In the dispiriting context of the current energy crisis, ongoing war, increasing pollution and environmental damage, the chapter A Not Too Comfortable Future depict an alternative scenario for our future world. Through multidisciplinary design, it considered what we might need to design – and how we might need to change – to restore our everyday lives. This reimagined way of living takes a resourceful approach to reusing waste materials. An adaptable waterproof shelter, incorporating discarded clothing, offers a new type of home for a forest-based life. The lightweight shelter leaves the forest floor almost untouched, while allowing its inhabitants to live more nomadic lives. Experimental clothing and furniture made from recycled materials keep us warm and comfortable in ingenious ways. Throughout the residency, Dr Fantini van Ditmar explored how subtraction could be integrated into a dematerialised design for Net Zero futures. As a reflection of her pedagogical practice in the context of environmental collapse, Delfina articulated a multidisciplinary collaboration through critical speculative experimentation. Thus, the roles she decided to explore in the project was that of the system thinker and the convenor.
