Abstract or Description:

The Post-Covid era constitutes a new paradigm, providing a new set of environmental and social challenges for designers. We are experiencing life affirming transformations, but leading UN reports, state it did little to ‘slow climate change’ as covid-19 was inadequate at transforming our behaviour. Extractive industries and excessive production chains are further driving ecological collapse.

In the age of the planetary climate crisis, a comprehensive, radical approach towards design and production is imperative. Design is a practice intervening across, locations, cultures, demographics, and global economies. Designers are not only accountable for innovative solutions but are also intertwined with environmental collapse. By evading ecological implications, designers are complicit in (potential) problems they have created.

Authors triangulate a ‘future’ world enhancing ecological systems (for sustaining life) and material reduction. The design space is mapped through: projects, organisations and initiatives achieving ‘Craft 3.0’. The proposition contests prevalent norms, highlighting case studies and good practice where ‘Design Industries’ can reduce its material and ecological impact. Authors position regenerative and aware ‘Craft 3.0’ as a discourse of considerate reduction, deeply considerate to its surroundings and contexts.
