Tatham, Joanne and O'Sullivan, Tom, 2018, Show, Exhibition or Event, A Successful Proposition for the Great North Exhibition
Abstract or Description: | A commission for The Great Exhibition of the North. BALTIC along with other major cultural organisations in the NE England was one of the key partners in a successful £5m bid to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. "A Successful Proposition for the Great North Exhibition" was one of the commissioned works within the curated programme, with £20K funding from BALTIC. A sequence of faces was positioned throughout BALTIC, each "speaking" a constructed text that cumulatively explored issues around the instrumentalisation of Art. The artwork focused on the context of its own commission within The Great Exhibition of the North, juxtaposing the hyperbole of the event alongside histories that revealed the complexity of relationships between economics and culture, and between ethics and morality. The exhibited work included a publication that visitors could take away. |
