Talbot, Emma, 2018, Show, Exhibition or Event, Emma Talbot @ Nicolas Krupp
Abstract or Description: | A one-person exhibition of two new bodies of work; 'Fluid' and 'Bound' - each comprising of a group of large silk hangings, free standing three-dimensional pieces and drawings. The two bodies of work were installed so that half the gallery space was focused on each group of works, with the hangings back to back providing an evident symmetry/mirroring of the two halves of the space. The works was focused on two opposing philosophical, political and psychological preoccupations that I identified (through reading current theory and online research) as contemporary narratives; 'Bound' focused on the anthropocene; a fin-de-siecle atmosphere, calcification, static positions, entropy and death - whereas 'Fluid' focused on fluid notions of love, identity, movement, life. The exhibition proposed that these two preoccupations are contradictory yet simultaneous within contemporary discourse and narrative. The work ruminated on personal material and explored these wider discourses through a personal perspective, as is common in my work. |
