Matthews, Bob, 2017, Show, Exhibition or Event, Gestures of Resistance
Abstract or Description: | Gestures of Resistance was an exhibition and procession of artworks by international contemporary artists and was exhibited at the Romantso Cultural Centre in Athens for Documenta14. Gestures of Resistance aimed to respond to the current general mood of political anxiety and alienation by opening up socio-political critique in order to resist the palpable feeling of disempowerment. The artworks within Gestures of Resistance reflect on the current state of our political condition, our current housing situation, the state of education and art, liberalism, diversity and pluralism, in this moment of historical crisis, whereby the state of today seems to have strong links to the state of the past. The exhibition extended outside the gallery space in procession form. Artwork took to the streets as plinths, banners, sculptures and performances, taking the conversations and ideas out of the gallery and sent on route between the Romansto Cultural Centre to the Polytechneion through the city’s centre. |
