Jewell, Dick, 2017, Show, Exhibition or Event, The Jazz Room, Kinky Gerlinky, Roundtable discussion
Abstract or Description: | Microcinema presenting a week of artists screenings on the subject of archive and memory at Downing College Cambridge Heong Gallery and Howard Auditorium with additional screenings at Art Picture House. Both of my films presented The Jazz Room and Kinky Gerlinky method of making hinged on creating an ongoing dialogue with the subject to produce a living document. With the Jazz Room was about the development of jazz dance at the Electric Ballroom, Camden. At the start of each nights filming the film so far was projected above the dance floor before continuing to shoot more material. Over a period of a year and a half this created an interaction between the dancers and the film that informed the development of the dance style. Kinky Gerlinky is a documentary of a nightclub edited from 22 episodes. An examination of the culture and sexual politics of celebrity and glamour with interaction and intimacy by way of participants watching previous episodes on vhs whilst preparing themselves for the club and consequently most of the documented action directed straight at the camera. |
