Davis, Kate, 2016, Conference or Workshop, 'Looking Through The Wrong End of The Telescope', a paper at Creative Differences: Dyslexia and Neurodiversity in Science, Art and Design, Royal College of Art, London, 2016-10-05.
Abstract or Description: | This was an event that took the form of a conference and exhibition organised by the RCA and Imperial College to coincide with National Dyslexia Week. Participants from a range of backgrounds were invited to speak or present papers on how dyslexia or dyspraxia might have shaped their approaches to problem solving, or influenced their creative practices. This was followed by a panel discussion that focused on a number of issues, including how a late diagnosis might make sense of long term issues, and how this might be different to those individuals who were aware of their learning difference from childhood. The paper given by Davis was titled 'Looking Through The Wrong End of The Telescope’. ‘Kicking an Elephant Through a Cat Flap’ was an exhibition of work produced by dyslexic and dyspraxic artists and designers associated with the RCA to coincide with the conference. The artwork presented by Davis 'Orphaned Thinking Part One' 2016 ( Inkjet print ) is a diptych text work made in collaboration with the Scottish artist David Moore . It is formed of two parallel texts, one in red and one in black that represent a collaborative monologue in the form of a manifesto as rant. It is part of a series of text works that examine how radical opinions can be formed out of misunderstanding and misinterpreting the world around us . The text incorporates references to literature and myth including Moby Dick and Bella the Roman Goddess of war . |
