Barfield, Naren, 2013, Show, Exhibition or Event, geographies1

Abstract or Description:

‘geographies1’ was a three-person invitation show, marking the publication of a new print folio by 2bstudios (est. 1996) and Eyecon (est. 1998). The work is linked through thematic research interests that each artist has investigated over the past 20 years in intellectual and critical territory related to the following four key-words: space; place; location; psychogeography.
This research continued Barfield’s investigation into n-dimensional space and hyperspace, simultaneity theory, space and place (Abbott, 1991; Henderson, 1983; Adcock, 1983; Bergson, 1996; Calvino, 1997; Massey, 2007; Coverley, 2010). The visual research incorporated methodological strategies including: juxtaposition of images of the ‘real’ with spatially reconfigured versions; interplay between real and ideal objects with fragmentary memories and palimpsests; combination of alternate drawing, photographic, mathematical and symbolic representational and notational systems; and research into visual languages and applications of targets in relation to issues of ‘ownership’ of space and place, intrusion of the surveillance society into the public domain and debates regarding public/private, and increasing targeting and tracking of individuals in (previously) public spatial activity. The research thus observes the transition from the individual’s encounter with space and their geography, to the state’s (and its agencies’) interest in citizens’ activities in (the state’s) space.
‘geographies1’ was published as a folio of 36 original fine art prints, 12 by each artist, signed and boxed, and exhibited at Other Shores Arts Institute and Gallery, in the 751 D Park in Beijing’s 798 contemporary art district. The event was at the invitation of, and in collaboration with, Shi Fang, President of Dalian University, with the venue chosen for its 25-year track record of working with leading Chinese and international artists and organisations. Press and TV interviews accompanied the launch. A major follow up exhibition has been agreed for Dalian Modern Museum in 2014.
