Jacoby, Sam, Sookhoo, Dhruv and Ozer, Seyithan, 2026, Printed Publication, Housing standardisation and design quality in the North East: Report and recommendations
| Abstract or Description: | This report summarises findings on how housing associations and architects in the North East of England interpret and apply housing standards to achieve design quality. Based on workshops, public events, and case studies associated with the Housing Standardisation in the North East exhibition at Newcastle’s Farrell Centre in 2026, it highlights how regulatory requirements, organisational standards, and professional knowledge shape housing design and delivery. The report identifies design governance, organisational learning, and the translation of evidence into practice as critical to improving housing outcomes. Six recommendations, co-authored with workshop participants, address design governance, evidence collection, adaptable standard house types, briefing and procurement, accessibility, and learning from completed projects. Together, they provide a practical framework for strengthening design quality and supporting continuous organisational learning. |
