Chen, Shuxin, 2026, Thesis, Cultivating a Chinese humanistic framework for the transformation from design education to entrepreneurship PhD thesis, School of Design.
| Abstract or Description: | This study focuses on the journey from design education to design entrepreneurship, exploring how Chinese humanistic traditions can offer an alternative perspective on the theoretical foundations, methodological approaches, and value framework for design innovation education and entrepreneurial practice. The author takes her practical journey as the research subject to gather localised, firsthand research insights drawn from her practice in China. She acts as a design educator and enterprise designer, continuously conducting educational workshop experiments, product innovation, and organisational design, allowing theoretical creation and practical evolution to unfold in synchrony. It highlights the Chinese humanistic traditions as a theoretical resource, employing Chinese Emergence and Embodied Knowing with the Research through Design approach, integrating three research methods: co-creation, action research, and reflective practice, to re-interpret key concepts, including the Greatness is like Water, Continuity of Being, the unity of Heaven and Humanity, and the Dao of Nature in the transformation from design education to entrepreneurship. This research first reviews the literature to analyse the knowledge foundations of Chinese humanistic traditions, design and entrepreneurship. It then explores how core ideas from Chinese philosophy guide the author's design practice, shaping the journey and generating knowledge through three interconnected projects. The first is an educational project, Innovation Island, which proposes a co-creation process to help design students bring their design concepts to market. The second is a design-entrepreneurial project, SCRY, which creates a vision-driven experimental product development loop. The third project, Dao Jing Framework, builds on the other practical projects and outlines a Chinese humanistic value framework for the design entrepreneurship process. By presenting this research journey, the author cultivates a state of Chinese humanistic exploration and understands design entrepreneurship as a process of continuous co-creation between humans and the world. The original contribution of this research lies in introducing Chinese humanistic traditions into the theoretical and methodological development of design entrepreneurship, and developing a framework through the research process. The framework provides anchors, principles, and value coordinates for emerging design entrepreneurs, offering an alternative perspective to approaches focused on technology-driven or market-based entrepreneurship. |
