| Abstract or Description: | Food is great! Food is one of the universal elements of the human experience, whether we like it or not we all have to eat. Food is central to all social functions, holidays and eating together has been a part of life since the days that tribes of hunter-gatherers were roaming the planet. Food is a wonderful representation of places and regions and colonial legacies, in short we are what we eat. In line with other facets of human life, food is in the midst of a fundamental transformation. The rise of food delivery platforms is challenging the ways in which food is produced, distributed, and consumed. While these platforms promise convenience, their growth has created an exploitative and extractive system that benefits corporations at the expense of workers, restaurateurs, eaters and the planet. This system reduces humanity’s resilience and threatens to operationalise food to an overpriced carrier of nutrients and calories, bereft of any pleasure. This paper introduces peri-feral design as a framework for understanding and resisting the colonial infrastructure of food delivery platforms hoping to foster more equitable, community-driven and resilient food systems. |
