Barrios-O'Neill, Danielle, Kang, Yiyun and Ramirez-Figueroa, Carolina, 2022, Show, Exhibition or Event, Luminous: Interactive and immersive experience design (Unpublished)
| Abstract or Description: | The Luminous project was a design competition and research-led programme delivered in mid-2022 through a collaboration between LG Display, a global leader in advanced display technologies, and the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London. Developed as part of the RCA’s Information Experience Design programme, the project invited postgraduate design students to explore how emerging display technologies might enable new forms of meaning-making, perception, and engagement. Students were challenged to work directly with LG Display’s advanced OLED technologies, including transparent, flexible, and curved displays, using them not simply as screens but as active materials within designed experiences. The brief asked participants to consider how these technologies could be used to challenge or disrupt perspective—reframing how information is perceived, interpreted, and embodied across physical and digital environments. Emphasis was placed on experimentation, critical inquiry, and the development of speculative or experiential outcomes rather than conventional product concepts. The programme resulted in a diverse range of responses, including interactive installations, spatial interventions, and hybrid physical–digital systems. The work culminated in a public exhibition held at Old Street Gallery, London, between September and October 2022. The exhibition presented 15 individual projects and 21 group projects, offering audiences insight into how emerging display technologies can be reimagined through design-led experimentation. Collectively, Luminous demonstrated the potential of industry–academic collaboration to expand the cultural and experiential possibilities of cutting-edge technologies. |
