  • Residency as Guest Artist at Shigaraki Cultural Ceramic Park, Shigaraki, Japan.

Britton, Alison, 2010, Residency, Residency as Guest Artist at Shigaraki Cultural Ceramic Park, Shigaraki, Japan.

Abstract or Description:

I was invited in 2010 as Guest Artist for a residency at Shigaraki while the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Shiga, was showing the touring Hans Coper retrospective exhibition. I was invited to give a lecture on Coper and his context and legacy in Britain during my stay. The lecture was on April 18 and was called 'Narratives of Form'.
Abstract:'Britton discusses the importance of Hans Coper and Lucie Rie as significant potters in a Modernist context in Britain, and their impact on the work of the following artistic generation. Making an initial reference to the shared heritage of the studio pottery movement in Japan and Brigtain because of the connection between Leach, Yanagi and Hamada and the idea of the Artist Potter, Briton goes on to describe the second phase in the UK distinguished by Coper and Rie, bringing a sense of European Modernism to Britain in the post war period, their ethos distinguished from the Leach tradition by their urban environment and their teaching in art schools.'
Subsequently I contributed to a Japanese TV programme on Coper for NHK, partly filmed in Ceramics and Glass at RCA, where Coper taught from 1969 - 75. This was aired in August 2010.
During my studio residency at Shigaraki I made a small body of new work in red clay.
