Abstract or Description:

This research study focuses on a culture-oriented approach to Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) design for products and its impact on product recognition. The study identifies the CMF elements of a traditional Maharashtrian craft and translates them onto a household product (a bowl). The research investigates the recognition value, viewer's perceptions, and preferences for the new proposed CMF designs of bowls that are inspired by Maharashtrian Khana sarees. A mixed-methods approach is taken combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Study results indicate that a cultural approach to CMF design allows designers to present more recognizable products in the market. CMF designers need to target a specific user group and cultural context to fulfil the user’s aesthetic needs and desires.
