Alevizou, Panagiota, Ramster, Gail, Turner, Jerome and West, Tamara, 2013, Conference or Workshop, Geographies of Social Media: Communities, Landscapes and Interactions at RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2013, London, UK, 28-30 Aug 2013.
Abstract or Description: | The aim of this informal session is to invite questions and debates around the ways in which communities are formed, strengthened or altered by the use of social media. How do people move through, interact with and shape spaces such as Twitter, Google+, Facebook etc? What is the impact of these journeys and interactions on local environments, cultures, politics, everyday practices, connections and perceptions? How often does social media put people in a room together physically as well as virtually? How might these interactions be investigated or measured? What are the inherent possibilities and limitations of methodological approaches and theoretical frameworks? Questions might address – but are by no means limited to- online/offline interactions, spaces of inclusion and exclusion , creativity and co-creation, community forums and projects. The session seeks to encourage diverse debate and as such welcomes suggestions from a variety of perspectives. Participants will be asked to formulate a question or theme for discussion which they will introduce to the group within a very short (5 min) presentation. Questions will then be posted around the different tables to enable debate before a final group discussion. |
