Mclean, Flora, 2016, Show, Exhibition or Event, Jazzmoda

Abstract or Description:

Jazzmoda was a 90 minute workshop/masterclass/ demonstration, led by Flora McLean and the Josiel Konrad Quartet. This vibrant and unique experience for students aimed to engage them and encourage their experimentation in design at the intersection between design art / fashion and jazz, making them aware of the powerful relationship between feeling, imagination and creativity.

The practical design session, led by Flora McLean, provided the students with activities and demonstrations intended to show how to create design ideas from scratch, using still life drawing and collage work, before offering the opportunity to create hats and fashion accessories. As creator of the brand House of Flora, McLean brought her unique expertise that blends art and fashion, informed by the ability to convey feelings and thoughts to the wearer.

The Josiel Konrad Quartet played throughout the session - jazz music does not need to be understood, and can be interpreted as pure sounds, vibrations that spread in the air forming sound waves that are picked up by the auditory system, and transformed into electrical impulses in the brain. There, they are first processed in a region responsible for emotions and feelings (before being perceived by the centers involved in logical thought); with the release of neurotransmitters responsible for letting the mind, imagination and body feel more sharp and inspired.

The aim was for participants to experience the sort of metaphorical thinking that can facilitate the transformation of auditory art to visual and tactile art. This experiment sought not only to show in practice how to make art, create hats and fashion accessories, but also to encourage students to feel, express, think and convey their expressions and emotions through art and music.
