Talbot, Emma, 2017, Show, Exhibition or Event, Open Thoughts

Abstract or Description:

A one person exhibition of new works made specifically for the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein. The works in the exhibition set up a rumination on interior thoughts that make sense of life experiences and the translation of thoughts and personal narratives into language (words or images)
A series of large scale, double-sided painted text and image hangings, suspended throughout the first (downstairs) exhibition room, allowed the viewer to walk within a narrative space of self reflection, reading thoughts on both everyday communication such as speaking, writing, texting, emailing and metaphoric references to 'epic' moments such as birth and death, ancient histories and mythology. A hanging at the centre of the space referred to life as a suspended illusion.
Once the viewer had walked through the space, if they turned back - or on their return through the space on their way out - they would see the verso sides of the painted silks - painted with brick motifs so as to make a representational wall - which concealed the 'open thoughts' they had just experienced.

In the second room (upstairs), the works referenced ideas of personal transformation and potential. The works considered transfigurations from woman to bird and woman to snake, in reference to mythological representations of older women's powers. Four folded drawings on Japanese paper, articulating the same subject, were pinned to the wall and two installations of 3 dimensional works were presented.

The exhibition was the subject of an article by Annelie Pohlen in Kunstforum, Bande 251
