  • 'BOGOF', 2016 & 'Save Southend-on-Sea Central Library', 2009

Thompson, Milly, 2016, Show, Exhibition or Event, 'BOGOF', 2016 & 'Save Southend-on-Sea Central Library', 2009

Abstract or Description:

'BOGOF', 2016, is the second of two prints commissioned by Focal Point Gallery.
'BOGOF' (Buy One Get One Free) sardonically embraces gentrification and neo-liberalism and is designed double sided to offer its collectors viewing choice. The front is designed in an anti aesthetic council design style, whilst the back is minimal black and white.
‘BOGOF’ is a purposely hypocritical response to an earlier 2009 commission - a luke-warm campaign to save Southend’s Central Library which Focal Point Gallery was then situated within, and that was earmarked for demolition. The library was moved into a new purpose-built building with space designated for Focal Point Gallery. The new building is no longer specifically designated for Southend’s community, but serves Essex College too. Both library and gallery exist in a newly gentrified state; the gallery is housed in a space exactly the size of a Tesco Local, should its grants fall through.
‘BOGOF’ was exhibited in 'The Peculiar People', 2016 at Focal Point Gallery alongside 'Save Southend-on-Sea Central Library’ from 2009, the second designed to mirror the first.
Focal Point Gallery commissioned 'Save Southend-on-Sea Central Library’, the first of the two prints to accompany Thompson's 2009 solo exhibition 'Savoir Faire’.
