During Rayson’s studio based research, he worked closely with Claas Gutsche and Andrzej Klimowski, both experienced printmakers using lino-cutting techniques. The graphics are printed from the original cuts on a "Präsident"-cylinder printing press from 1958.

Rayson researched the origins of the Lubok tradition, a popular genre during the last half of the seventeenth century. These prints sometimes appeared in series and were used as decoration in houses and inns.
This type of art was popular with lower social classes because it provided an inexpensive opportunity to display artwork in the home. Taking this research as a lead Rayson developed The Ship as a short visual fable.
