Jones, Sarah, 2016, Show, Exhibition or Event, Cabinet (Spiral)

Corporate Creators: Counter Editions, London, Team GB, Olympics
Abstract or Description:

Commission from Olympics Team GB and Counter Editions, London to produce a new limited edition print for Rio Olympics 2016. The eight contributing artists are: Tracey Emin, Anne Hardy, Howard Hodgkin, Sarah Jones, Eddie Peake, Benjamin Senior, David Shrigley and Sam Taylor-Johnson.

This new work continued and responded to the Olympics and to the history of Olympic posters. Tate have recently purchased one from the edition for their collection.

'Cabinet (Spiral) continues Sarah Jones’s ‘Cabinet’ series, in which an arrangement in a shallow field undergoes keen formal scrutiny. Familiar ornamental objects are transformed into a magnificent display inspired by the Olympic torch and flame, drawing closely on the rich legacy of twentieth century Olympic prints and posters. Cabinet (Spiral) is also inspired by photographic history; in early black and white photographic experiments, fine glassware was photographed in order to examine the medium’s ability to render clear materials. Here, Jones’s vibrant palette of glowing yellow, translucent blue, and limpid green references the colours of the iconic Brazilian flag'.

Since 1912, prints and posters have been commissioned for each of the Games, creating celebratory and inspiring meetings of art and sport. Building upon a relationship that started in 2012 with Counter Editions creating the Official Prints for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Counter has gone on to produce the official prints for Team GB at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and the Baku 2015 European Games, and now the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
