Thompson, Milly, 2016, Show, Exhibition or Event, I Choose Painting
|Abstract or Description:||
‘I Choose Painting’ was used by Akerman Daly to announce the beginning of a year long ‘online’ residency which is specifically for artists' writing. AD have commissioned Milly Thompson to develop an art text identity in relation to her research around representations of women through art-work, especially older or 'invisible' women (see 'Alison Jones and Milly Thompson C21ST RECENT HISTORY', 'Cougar', 'BOGOF' etc.). The residency will develop in the form of a series of art texts and poster-prints and builds on an earlier commission for AD’s Flash 500 series (see ‘Aroma Venus’, ‘Cougar’ etc). Throughout 2017 a series of works by Milly Thompson will be published by AD online and potentially in the form of printed media.
'I Choose Painting' is a piece of art text in the form of a poster-print. It looks at the use of paint and new media as tools of expression for women, and of the accentuation on female artists to use new media to express feminist/anti feminist concerns. ‘I Choose Painting’ attempts to ‘claim’ painting for women as a ‘gendered tool’. Of course, the work itself is a digital one and is thus innately and intentionally hypocritical.
