de Quin, Rebecca, 2010, Art or design object, Vase with Double-Walled Stand

Abstract or Description:

De Quin exhibited Vase with Double-Walled Stand as part of an exhibition by members of Contemporary British Silversmiths at the V&A’s Sackler Gallery during the 2010 London Design Festival. The work was displayed alongside a showcase of historic and contemporary silver pieces belonging to The Silver Trust collection.
Vase with Double-Walled Stand continued de Quin’s research into the theme of the vessel. Through material experiment it combined silver with non-precious metal. The use of copper reflected an interest displayed in her early work, where different metals and patination were used to experiment with colour. In Vase with Double-Walled Stand, de Quin used the reds of heat-treated copper to offset the brightness of a silver vessel. The project integrated the relation between object and process, object and subject of viewing, and the continuing modernist enquiry into form and the symbolism of the container/vessel (Adamson 2007). Rather than focus on utilitarian and ornamental forms of metalwork, de Quin offers artefacts as constructed objects that reflect on the relation between maker and viewer, inside and outside, and the work as ‘container’.
De Quin was one of three silversmiths who ran a demonstration workshop day entitled ‘Whizz, Bang’ in the V&A Sackler Centre Art Room in 2010. Members of the public were invited to view and try silversmithing techniques used in the making of the pieces on display. The Contemporary British Silversmiths’ website features an article about ‘Whizz, Bang’ with text and images by de Quin (http://www.contemporarybritishsilversmiths.org/2011/03/1466/).
The Goldsmiths’ Company commissioned de Quin to reproduce Vase with Double-Walled Stand alongside another piece in the series for their collection, exhibited in ‘Treasures of Today’ at the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin (2008) and Ruthin Crafts Centre (2010).
